Final stretch of the pilot test of the ECOPHIR APP, the platform for the management of reusable packaging

Judith Marti,

The development and implementation project of the ECOPHIR APP platform is about to reach its end with very positive results after successfully completing the pilot test with the active participation of several companies in the sector. This digital tool, promoted by the PackagingCluster in collaboration with INNOVACC Catalan Meat and Alternative Protein Cluster and developed by ECOPHIR RECICLA (JANEMORRAJA group), has been designed to facilitate the management of reusable commercial and industrial packaging, such as pallets and other formats, improving their traceability, reuse and ensuring compliance with Royal Decree 1055/2022 on packaging and packaging waste.

During the pilot test, the companies Obach, Noel Alimentaria, Mafrica, Enplater and Font Packaging have registered through the application more than 23,000 containers put into circulation, with a very positive balance between shipments and returns, thus demonstrating its operational efficiency. Currently, 50% of the registered containers have been reused and the other 50% are in circulation, thus meeting the reuse objectives set by Royal Decree 1055/2022 for the year 2030. Traceability reports have demonstrated efficient management and a clear contribution to the circularity of containers, with an estimated economic saving of 43% compared to the use of single-use containers.

In addition, users have highly valued the ease of use of the application, highlighting its potential to optimize logistics and reduce time in the management of reusable containers. This perception was shared and reinforced during a face-to-face meeting of the consortium held at the Ecolignor facilities (JANE MORRAJA group), where attendees exchanged experiences and consolidated collaboration between the project partners.

With the completion of this phase, ECOPHIR APP is positioned as a promising solution for companies that want to move towards more sustainable, efficient logistics aligned with European and national regulatory requirements on packaging and reuse.

The project, which will run until August 2025 with a budget of €99,229.31, is partially funded by ACCIÓ through the IRC 2024 call – Initiatives to Strengthen Competitiveness.
